Malena, who is home schooled, was diagnosed in December with chronic neuro Lyme disease, said her mother, Terri Weidle. The disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. Weidle adopted Malena from Guatemala when she was eight months old. Three years ago, she started having gastrointestinal problems, though it isn’t known when she contracted the disease, Weidle said. It’s progressed to the point that she uses a cane.
